Annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Check

Looking after your health starts with regular check-ups. Even if you're feeling well, an annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Check is one of the best ways to stay healthy, identify potential health concerns early, and support your long-term wellbeing.

If you're an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person, you're eligible for a free annual health check through eligible healthcare providers. This health assessment is also known as the 715 Health Check.

What is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Check?

The annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Check (715 Health Check) is a comprehensive assessment designed to support your overall health and wellbeing.

During the appointment, your GP will take the time to understand your current health, discuss any concerns, and help identify ways to keep you healthy now and into the future.

The health check is tailored to your age, medical history and individual health needs.

Why have an annual health check?

Many health conditions can develop without obvious symptoms. Having a health check every year gives your GP the opportunity to identify potential health concerns early, when they're often easier to treat.

Your annual health check may help identify or monitor:

  • Heart health and blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes risk
  • Kidney disease
  • Lung and respiratory health
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Hearing and vision concerns
  • Healthy eating and physical activity
  • Immunisations
  • Recommended cancer screening
  • Ongoing medical conditions and medications

Regular health checks also help you build a strong relationship with your GP and support your long-term health.

Who can have a health check?

The annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Check is available to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of any age.

You can have one every 12 months.

What happens during the appointment?

Your GP or practice nurse will spend time getting to know your health and wellbeing. Depending on your age and individual needs, your health check may include:

  • Measuring your height, weight and blood pressure
  • Reviewing your medical and family history
  • Discussing your diet, physical activity, smoking and alcohol use
  • Talking about your mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Reviewing your medications
  • Checking whether you're due for vaccinations or health screening tests
  • Developing a personalised plan to help you stay healthy

If any health concerns are identified, your GP can arrange follow-up care, referrals to other health professionals, or additional tests if required.

Is the health check free?

The annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Check is free at Aboriginal Medical Services and many general practices that offer bulk billing.

If you're unsure whether your local clinic provides the health check at no cost, simply contact the practice before booking and ask.
